AFRICA, EC

I really like these pictures that are on the Africa page. The pictures of the animals are so clean. I especially like the lion photos and the one with the male and female. I enjoy the still shots of animals a lot.

this photo I like because of the ground it is on and the expression on the elephants faces. It is an expression that I like, because I like how elephants act and how they are so peaceful.

The rule of photography in this pic is balance. The image is mirrored and has the same amount of elephant on both sides.

He used the Pentax 67II camera, various lenses and film. This is important because it helps him with the focus and being able to stay far away from the dangerous animals.

frustrated that he could not capture on film his feelings about and love for animals in east africa, he realized there was a way to achieve this through photography.

his hope for taking these photos is that people will realize how beautiful these animals are and that they wont destroy their homes.

"The speed of development in this part of Africa reminds me of what I have seen in one other place in the world: China"

His newest focus in photography is to let people know of the animals who live in the area they destroyed and are tearing up.

He puts the photos of the animals he took before the rubble and construction happened.

I guess the effect of this is that he make people aware of what they're doing and to create more awareness.

My feelings on these photos are iffy, I like the animal photos and i guess the construction puts them away from their habitat, but maybe the construction is good for people who need homes.

DSLR simulator

aperture settings: 2.8-22
shutter speed settings: 1 second, 1/60 second, 1/4000 sec
iso settings: 100-25600

ISO

Image result for photo taken in iso 200

1. The photo will not be blurry with the motion blur and will be crisper
2.  If there is plenty of light, you are free to use a low ISO and minimize the appearance of noise as much as possible.
3. you will need to pick between a sharp photo at a high ISO or a blurry photo at a low ISO.

shutter speed

slow shutter speed picture:    Image result for slow shutter speed photos
high shutter speed picture:  Image result for high shutter speed photos

1.
A)if i was shooting at bulldogs and hotdogs night, i would shoot on quicker shutter speeds. Because if you see people playing basketball, you need a quick shutter speed to capture the movement, and while the sun is still up.

B)if i was shooting while the sun was down, i would shoot in slower shutter speed to capture the moving lights near the tree in the courtyard and have them look like beams of lights.

2.

aperture

1. The part of the body we should closely relate aperture to is the pupil.
2. The larger the aperture, the more light collected, the smaller the aperture, the less amount of light.
3. with larger aperture, the field of depth is shorter and makes the background blurry.

Great B&W Photographers Part 3

The sweat drenched face of the man in the middle caught my eye first because its big and front and center. I chose this picture because i like how it tells a story of the hard working men in the war, perhaps Vietnam War.

In this photo,

I see a hard working man. A tired, and perhaps brave or even afraid man. I see the black smoke from an explosion mixed with the dirt it kicked up with it.
Image result for w eugene smith war photographsI smell the fresh gun smoke and gunpowder coming off the barrel of the guns around me. I smell the dirty men around me, especially the ones who haven't taken a shower in weeks. I smell the nearby ocean breeze as well.
I hear the loudness of the gunshots in the distance. I hear soldiers            talking and chattering in front of me as I quiver and shake,                        walking slowly behind them. I hear battle cries and shouting far              off.
I taste the saltiness from the ocean breeze (if they're by one). I                  taste the muggy water that got dropped in the dirt a couple of                    times. I taste the breakfast i had hours ago, still in my teeth.
I feel the heat of the sun beating down on my face and shoulders.            I feel the sweat going down my face. I feel scared of going into                battle knowing of certain death.

chose this picture because i like the mystery of what he is looking at behind him. The thing that caught my eye is the cigarette hanging out his mouth and the expression he has on his face.

Photo Manipulation and Ethics

1.  Some of the main points i read talking about manipulating images is that if you change the emotion or the actions in the photo, its unethical. Also some articles who use photoshop heavily are sometimes frowned upon, but it is becoming more mainstream i guess you could say and most pictures, even if its not obvious, could be "photoshopped".

2. One of the philosophy of newspapers regarding manipulation is that some of them cannot alter the colors of the pictures, which i think is a good thing, because some articles will alter the colors greatly and just ruin the picture.

3. I think changing the color of the persons skin isn't crossing the line, unless its very obvious and too overboard. Also maybe just changing the color of the background wouldn't matter much, but reshaping someones body greatly, thats what i think isn't ethical.

couric12
I think this photo is the most unethical. I think this because they made her more thin and less orange. I think the old camera might have made her skin that shade of orange but the making of her more thin isn't ethical at all in my opinion.

uwmadison12
I think this one is the least unethical because it doesn't "harm" anything or anyone in the picture. It isn't also really telling a fake story and tricking you into thinking anything false. All that it is doing is adding a person in the picture. Those reason are also why it is better than the first manipulated picture.

classmates academic photo shoot comments

https://aubsbesweet.blogspot.com/2018/09/academic-shoot.html

I like how they used focus on all of the pictures.
I also like how they used the angle in the third picture, ive never seen it before.

One thing they could have done is try and not get the kids arm in the second picture.

Academic Shoot reflection and critique

1. One challenge i encountered was trying not to have merges in the photos.
2. I found myself trying to hold the camera at a specific angle and height. For example, i made the camera lower for the first photo to make the table flatter and not take up so much space of the pic.
3. If i could do one thing different, i would have made the first picture in focus, because its a good pic but the blur totally ruined it.
4. I would do all the same angles the same, i fell like i did pretty good on those.
5. I think the rule of thirds is the easiest to achieve.
6. I think lines are the hardest to achieve.
7. I just don't know where you can take a picture with lines in the back.

Academic Photo Shoot

For this picture I used the rule of thirds. This picture doesn't have a subject bus i think she was studying math. It's not clear really what the subject is in this pic. I could have been closer to her to show the paper she was writing on to have a more specific subject. This picture was blurry because it was in manual focus because my partner uses it and forgot to change it back, but thats my fault for not checking.

This picture i tried to use the rule of thirds but if i moved over more, the feet by the top left would been more in the frame, so it is more of trying to avoiding merges. But in photoshop, i can crop it out. Its not too obvious right now that that's what i was trying to achieve. The subject is science because they're experimenting with gravity and speed. It's pretty clear what the subject is if they have done a project like this.

This photo is using balance as the rule. The subject is not very clear, but they were finishing up the same experiment as the picture above. Maybe i could have had the people doing the actual experiment in the background.

Great black and white photographers, PART 2

W. Eugene Smith was born Dec. 30th, 1918 in Wichita and died Oct. 15th, 1978. He worked in photojournalism his whole life and had a section in Life Magazine called "Country Doctor." He went to Notre Dame for only a year and took photography all thru high school. He also published some books like "The Big Book." In his older life, he married his wife from japan and lived there from 71-73. In 1974, he moved back to the US and died from his second stroke.

2012 winners

I chose this picture because its relatable. Im only a freshman and every night I've been studying and doing homework until 11 or 12.

This photo uses the rule of balance. By putting equal amounts of books on each side of him and the shelves are also balanced well.

I chose this photo because I like how they used colors and contrasting.

This photo also uses the rule of thirds by putting the people off centered and using the stripes to draw your eyes to the people as well.

3. Most of the pictures I looked at today might be hard to achieve because we are still early in the year and might not be able to find fire in any classrooms. but i could achieve the book one in the library.
4. I think I wanna take the one in the library because its the most achievable on Tuesday.
5. I will find the best angles i can, to me its the most important thing in a picture.

The story

This photo has a story in it to me. The expression on their faces are so happy and it looks like they are enjoying their field trip or whatever they are on. They're surrounded by nature and green, so maybe they are in a biology class on a trip to the woods by their school. Plus the fact that we don't exactly know what it is that she is looking at adds to the story a bit.

action and emotion

I think this photo has the most emotion and action. The faces everyone has on is so energetic and happy. And they are all involved in the activity they are doing. There is action and emotion all over the page. They are having fun and laughing, the best emotion to have all the time.

filling the frame

I feel like this picture fills the entire frame its in. the flame is obviously filling most of it, and even the light coming off the fire in the background, lighting up the room is filling up the darkness. I also like the expression on the guys face too. I don't think there is going to be a better photo than this, especially anytime soon, being only the first six weeks, i don't think we will do a lab like this yet.

post shoot reflection

1. A problem i had was for the square picture we had to take, there were so many that were obvious I could have taken, but i wanted to do something different from other people.
2. I mainly thought about the focus aspect of the photo taking, for example, when i took my happy photo, the one of the clouds, i made sure to remember to hold the focus so i could get the crispness of the clouds in the photo.
3. I just remembered the rule of thirds when we were shooting, i feel its the easiest to remember, but also the cleanest in my opinion.
4. I edited all four of my photos and made sure i remembered how all of them should look.
5. I would rather not shoot these prompts again, idk why but i just don't really like them, some were kinda hard to find.
6. Something like reflection would be cool to shoot sometime, or maybe sports action shots, i can only think of 2.

http://mallorysblogboi.blogspot.com/2018/09/

i like the cloud photo for happy and the bowie picture with the sidewalk.

one thing that could be better is the metal photo, it could be more in focus, but i get that the cameras aren't so good.

Prompt Shoot #1

bowie
for this one, i used rule of thirds and put the bulldog in the top left of the pic.

square
i used balance or maybe framing for this pic and used the edges of the lockers to act as the frame.

happy
for this one, i don't really know which rule i used, if i could crop it, i could make the sun in the corner and make it the rule of thirds.

metal
this picture has mergers, which i wish i can fix, but i don't really have any other rule for my metal photo.
